What is blunt force trauma?
Blunt force trauma is generally defined as any injury due to a forceful impact that does not involve penetration of the surface of the body. Penetrating injuries involve a break in the skin, which creates an open wound.
Blunt force trauma is often further defined by the area of the body that is affected. For example, categories of blunt force trauma include blunt abdominal trauma, blunt cranial trauma (traumatic brain injuries), and blunt thoracic trauma (more commonly called a chest injury). Other types of blunt force trauma included blunt pelvic trauma, blunt extremity trauma, and blunt cardiac trauma.
According to Osmosis, a medical publication, “blunt trauma can be caused by a combination of forces, including acceleration and deceleration (the increase and decrease in speed of a moving object), shearing (the slipping and stretching of organs and tissue in relation to each other), and crushing pressure.”
Blunt force trauma can be fatal.
What types of accidents cause blunt force trauma in Seattle?
At Smith McBroom, our personal injury lawyers handle the full range of accidents and events that can cause a blunt force trauma injury, including the following:
- Car accidents
- Truck accidents
- Motorcycle accidents
- Uber/Lyft accidents
- Construction site accidents
- Pedestrian accidents
- Bicycle accidents
- Slip and fall accidents
- Negligent security attacks
- Birth injuries such as the improper use of forceps
- Medical malpractice
- Nursing home abuse and neglect
- Sexual assaults
These accidents can cause blunt force trauma in many different ways to almost any part of the body. For example, a car accident can cause blunt force trauma if a passenger’s head strikes a dashboard, the body collides with any part of the car or with a passenger, or the airbags fail to deploy properly (or even when they do deploy properly).
Slip and fall accidents can occur when a shopper in a retail store slips on a wet surface and strikes their head or lands on their arm as they try to catch themselves when they fall.
Doctors may either be directly responsible for blunt force trauma such as when they use forceps or vacuum extractors improperly while delivering a child or because they fail to diagnose and treat blunt force trauma injuries in a medically competent manner.
What are the different types of blunt force trauma injuries?
Most of the types of blunt force trauma an accident victim can suffer are similar to those motor vehicle accident victims may suffer:
- Chest injuries: According to the National Institute of Health. chest injuries include thoracic cage injuries (rib injuries), a flail chest, pleura-related injuries (respiratory injuries), and pulmonary injuries that affect an accident victim’s ability to breathe. Life-threatening conditions that may require immediate treatment include “airway obstruction, tension pneumothorax, open pneumothorax, massive hemothorax, flail chest, pericardial tamponade.”
- Traumatic brain injuries: Victims who hit their head against a dashboard in a car accident, fall to the ground while on the property of another, are struck on the head at a construction site, suffer cerebral palsy or other injuries due to a lack of oxygen and blood to the brain during delivery, or suffer head injuries due to improper medical care or other reasons, may suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBIs can cause long-term physical pain, emotional trauma, memory difficulties, and the loss of cognitive function. TBIs include contusions, concussions, hematomas, hemorrhaging, and secondary brain injuries as the brain moves back and forth.
- Pregnancy complications: A pregnant woman with a TBI should be examined to determine what complications such as placental abruption can affect both the mother and the fetus.
- Fractures: Slip and falls, vehicle accidents, and other accidents can cause broken bones that don’t penetrate the skin. Surgery may be required to properly repair or move the bone. Even when the broken bones heal, some accident victims live with chronic arthritis and a lack of complete movement and a loss of function of the bones or joints.
- Internal organ damage: Osmosis states that the organs that can be damaged due to blunt force trauma include the spleen, liver, kidneys, bladder, diaphragm, and the large and small intestines. Organ damage can result in hemorrhaging, circulatory failure, organ failure, and death.
- Spinal cord injuries: Victims who are thrown about a car, tossed from their motorcycle, fall on their back, or injure their spinal cord due to other types of accidents may develop paralysis, herniated discs, spasticity, bowel and bladder difficulties, breathing difficulties, and other injuries. Moderate and severe spinal cord injuries can require a lifetime of medical care and cause a lifetime of physical and emotional pain.
- Internal bleeding: If a blood vessel ruptures, internal bleeding can occur. Internal bleeding can be fatal if not treated in time.
Blunt force trauma can also cause severe bruises, blood clots, aneurysms, shock, and changes in blood pressure.
The diagnostic tests may include X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasound, blood tests, and urine tests to help look inside your body to analyze your blunt force trauma.
The treatments for blunt force trauma vary depending on the location of the injury, the severity of the injury, and many other factors. Our Seattle blunt force trauma lawyers work with your doctors (and our network of medical professionals when necessary) to determine what treatments you’ll need and how your life will be different and harder because of your trauma. The treatments may include blood transfusions, surgery, medications, rehabilitative therapy, and other treatments.
